The United Nations Global Compact is the largest and most influential international organization in the world that promotes corporate social responsibility and sustainable development. It was announced by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan during a speech at the World Economic Forum on January 31, 1999, and was officially launched at the United Nations headquarters in New York on July 26, 2000. The Compact operates under the United Nations Secretariat, authorized by the UN General Assembly. Its mission is "to promote responsible business practices and UN values within the global business community and the United Nations system." The UN Global Compact is a founding member of the United Nations Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative. Other founding members include the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI), the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP-FI), and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
The chairman of the board of directors of the United Nations Global Compact is the serving United Nations Secretary-General. The members of the United Nations Global Compact Board are personally appointed by the Secretary-General.
